On June 18, 2025, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled 6-3 to uphold a Tennessee law that barred transgender children from receiving specific treatments. A lawyer for the National Center for LGBTQ Rights, Shannon Minter, said "This decision casts little if any light on how a majority of justices will analyze or rule on other issues," regarding the ruling. The justices avoided answering a question of whether laws regarding transgender individuals would have to pass a higher bar than is currently standard to become law by finding that the Tennessee law did not discriminate against transgender people. An attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union commented "There are myriad examples of discrimination against transgender people by the government making their way through the lower courts."
