Republican state congressmen in Texas, at the urge of the White House, have proposed a new map of congressional districts that would most likely give the GOP five additional seats in Congress if passed. More than fifty Democratic Texas state lawmakers have fled the state to break quorum and delay a vote on the new map, going to Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York. If the new map were to be passed, 5 new Republican seats in the House of Representatives would most likely mean President Trump would continue to have an advantage in passing his legislative agenda through Congress. The Democratic governors of New York(Kathy Hochul), Illinois (J.B. Pritzker), and California (Gavin Newsom) have said that if the new map is passed in Texas, they might gerrymander their own states to favor democrats, with the Trump administration also pressuring Missouri, Ohio, and Indiana. If taken further, it seems this situation could escalate into a nationwide gerrymandering war, possibly eliminating accurate representation of voters in Congress.
