The Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling on June 27, 2025 limiting the ability of federal courts to issue nationwide injunctions. The court agreed with a request from the Trump administration to restrain court orders that obstructed Trump's executive order regarding birthright citizenship. Prior to this ruling, judges in any of the 94 federal district courts could issue a nationwide injunction that would stop government orders or policies universally throughout the country. Under the SCOTUS ruling, injunctions now only apply to the plaintiff that originally sued, arguing that nationwide injunctions are much broader than needed to provide relief to a plaintiff. This ruling greatly shifted power from the judicial branch to the executive.
