On July 29, 2025, President Emmanuel Macron of France announced that the French nation will recognize a Palestinian nation in September of 2025. The French embassy in the United States issued a statement saying that "France considers the right to self-determination to be sacred" and that "In the name of the thousand-year-long relationship between France and the Jewish people. In the name of the right of peoples to self-determination.
France recognizes that Palestinians have this same right: the right to their own homeland." Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom soon stated the U.K.'s decision to do the exact same thing in September unless Israel were to end the current situation in Gaza and pledge to create a two-state result. Just one day later, Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada announced that Canada would do likewise. Carney said the move would depend on certain rehabilitations of the Palestinian democratic system, such as holding elections without Hamas. Then, on August 11, 2025, Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia announced that "Australia will recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th Sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in September, to contribute to international momentum towards a two-state solution, a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages." These four countries' decisions have created global pressure for recognition of Palestinian statehood.
