About 700 Marines, approximately 2,000-4,000 National Guardsmen, and some law enforcement has been sent to Los Angeles in response to protests against immigration raids. The troops have been deployed to safeguard federal property as well as personnel. However, the LA County Sheriff has said that he and his office are still trying to get "simple questions" answered about the troops' goal. The Pentagon is currently creating guidelines to let the Marines know what actions they can or cannot take. The state of California has sued Trump over his use of the National Guard troops in the state, which California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced by saying that Trump "trampled" California's sovereignty. The lawsuit claims that the President did not have the constitutional authority to deploy the California National Guard and that his doing so was unconstitutional. President Trump has also threatened to arrest California Governor Gavin Newsom, saying "I would do it if I were Tom. I think it’s great." The President was speaking about Tom Homan, the White House Executive Associate Director for Enforcement and Removal Operations, commonly called the "border czar". Newsom responded to this comment with "Come after me, arrest me. Let’s just get it over with, tough guy."
