On August 22, 2025, FBI agents searched the home and office of President Donald Trump's former APNSA (Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs) John Bolton. Bolton has frequently criticized Trump's foreign policy approach, calling him "stupid" after he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the situation in Ukraine. The searches were reportedly conducted in regard to handling of classified documents by Bolton. A person close to Bolton apparently told NBC that they thought the search was a sort of punishment for Bolton's book "The Room Where It Happened" among other times Bolton criticized Trump, saying: "It's retribution, pure and simple." The search was an extension of an investigation started during the Biden administration. The FBI said that these agents were conducting "court-authorized activity."
